Dear Marshall Community,
Welcome to Marshall Middle School. I am happy to serve as the principal of such a beautiful school facility with so many dedicated staff members. While I am new to the Janesville school community, I have thirty years of experience in education. I received my bachelor's degree and Social Studies Teaching License from California State University Sacramento before becoming a middle school and high school Social Studies teacher in Rancho Cordova, California. In 1995 I earned my Master's Degree in School Administration and entered the world of administration in 1997 in Modesto, California.
In 2002, my wife and I left California and moved to reconnect with her Wisconsin roots. Since that time, I have served as a high school assistant principal for three years and have served as a middle school principal since 2005.
I bring a strong commitment to school excellence, both academically and behaviorally, that focuses on student growth and systems development to promote and support that growth. Middle schoolers are hardwired to fill four basic needs: fun, competence, autonomy, and relationships. It is my challenge to support our teachers in meeting those needs in a safe and academically rigorous manner.
I look forward to working with your students and your family as together, we support our young people's growth.
Hank Schmelz, Principal
