Our Principal
Dear Marshall Community,
Welcome to Marshall Middle School. I joined the cardinal nation in 2020 after serving as a middle school principal for two other districts for fifteen years. My teaching background was in Social Studies and as a principal I bring that teaching passion to my daily work.
While I am fairly new to the Janesville school community, I have over thirty years of experience in education. I received my bachelor's degree and Social Studies Teaching License from California State University Sacramento before becoming a middle school and high school Social Studies teacher in Rancho Cordova, California. In 1995 I earned my Master's Degree in School Administration and entered the world of administration in 1997 in Modesto, California. In 2002, my wife and I left California and moved to reconnect with her Wisconsin roots.
I bring a strong commitment to school excellence, that focuses on student growth and systems development to support that growth. Middle schoolers are hardwired to fill four basic needs: fun, competence, autonomy, and relationships. It is my challenge to support our teachers in meeting those needs in a safe and academically rigorous manner.
I look forward to working with your students and your family as we support our young people's growth. Feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns.
Kind regards,
Hank Schmelz, Principal
